What is Philosophy?

A Personal Definition

The real definition of philosophy cannot be objectively defined because one must first learn to philosophize before he can fully arrive at a concrete definition of what it is. Simply put, it is through experiencing it that a person can define it. One must learn to search meaning for his life though rational reflection by considering his thought and holistic experience. The task of philosophy includes commitment, or the active search for truth, proper attitude in approaching reality, considering a way of life and thinking philosophically. Philosophy, as a dynamic process, presupposes a beginning known as the act of questioning. This process starts with one’s self through asking who he is, and how and why he exists. This act somehow relates to the act of doubting of Rene Descartes which implies that one must learn to question the truthfulness of things. Also, the process of philosophizing implies liberation or freedom from unquestioning acceptance. One must be open to possibilities or to recognize the past and potentialities. Liberation leads to self-project and affirmation of oneself through personal philosophical resolution. Therefore, philosophy is a subversive activity or something that is open to historicity and open to what can and should be. Another characteristic would be the personhood which suggests that philosophy is a personal task that is operative in life (creative project). Creative project is the continuous fulfillment of his possibilities through integration of his experiences and thus, his philosophical world-view becomes the basis of discourse with his fellowmen.
